Okay, so I'm slightly obsessed with the "fairy thing" at this point. I have been living among the cars, concrete and city lights too long! Mother Earth is calling me.
I decided Friday I wanted a visual reminder of fairylove (see my last blog entry) to create an altar in my home -- a playful reminder of giggle-power and the value of lightening up and being one with the elements. So off I went to the one location in San Francisco that could meet and exceed my need -- The Enchanted Crystal on Union Street (their website does no justice, btw). This store is jam packed, corner to corner, with angel, fairy and goddess figurines and has been a SF fixture for 15 years.
In I went. I was swept away into fantasyland. I walked all the way around the store twice, looking into the smiling faces of pixies, elves, angels, mermaids, faries and other magical folks. I was so attracted to the silly and enchanted figurines! At the same time a stern voice in my head said, "you're too old for 'dolls' and things like this! Grow up!" I shoo-ed the voice away and kept enjoying the moment. I gave myself a permission slip to just have fun and imagine.
For me, it's the face that makes the sclupture. Unfortunately, many of the figurines in this store are mass produced and lack equisite features ... but on the second lap, a custom fairy with huge eyelashes and bright blue eyes captured my attention. Horaay! I found my new totem. I gave myself permission several times to get her, since my inner critics kept mocking me about it being a frivolous expense, and after all, "what would people think?" I headed to the register.
Walking towards the desk, I happened to look at a massive Christmas tree in the center of the store. Slowly, as my vision scanned up, I drew in a big breath as the most spectacular thing I had seen in the store so far caught my eyes. What were the magnificent creations hidden away up on the rafters???? I asked a saleswoman and she replied that those were the famous fairy hats they had made for every year they attended the Union Street Easter Festival.
I can't even begin to describe these captivating creations.... most were straw hats with wide brims at the base. Towering above each one, though, was a mountain of glory! Technicolor flower arrangements, feathers, toadstools, mushrooms, elves, fairies, glittering orbs and more. There must have been 2 dozen up there... secretly shining down on all the store visitors who probably never looked up once to notice their splendor. I was completely taken with the creativity and mysticism of the magical hats! Right then and there, I vowed that I will have a Fabulous Fairy Hat Making Party and invite all my friends over to make delightful hats to wear in the next parade. Horaay! I love it when things like this happen!
Let me know if you want to come to my party... and go check out those hats!
